How to ban a union

Although reported elsewhere, Al-Ghad is publishing the full text of a letter from the Iraqi Oil Ministry forbidding all dealings with Iraqi unions. This serves as a historical testament of the slide towards to the days of worker repression as practised by the previous regime in Iraq.

Further to our general notifications of No. 2304 dated 14/2/2007 to ban dealing with non-governmental organisations which are not registered, or in breach of agreed conditions and procedures of registration, and of 4584 dated 25/2/2007 (whose copies are enclosed).
The Minister has directed forbidding any member of any trade union or committee organised in the name of their trade union, as these unions lacking legal status to work in the Public sector, and they are not allowed to use premises, facilities, or belongings of the companies, as they have no legal standing to act inside the Governmental sectors.
We will be obliged That you be informed and take the necessary proceedings to carry out the notice above within a period of two weeks maximum, in accordance with his highness’s instruction, and keep us informed.
